Evolving life: the evolution with tradeoffs, frustration in selection and growing complexity
ANL organizes an interdisciplinary workshop with the support of ICTP, with opening speech by the President of Armenia H.E. Armen Sarkissian. "Evolving life: the evolution with tradeoffs, frustration in selection and growing complexity. " ,Yerevan, March-29-April 3 2019.
David B. Saakian, Eugene Koonin are the chairs of conference. Contact: saakian@yerphi.
Biological systems reach hierarchical complexity that has no counterpart outside the realm of biology. Undoubtedly, biological entities obey the fundamental physical laws but can today's physics provide an explanatory framework for understanding the evolution of biological complexity? The answer to this question is far from clear but there are tantalizing indications that the theory of frustrated states resulting in pattern formation in glass-like media can be adapted to describe transitions in biological evolution that bring about new levels of complexity. The goal of the conference is to address the parallels - as well as the differences - between the physical and biological perspectives on complexity and its evolution. This theme relates to the notorious problem of the directionality (or lack thereof) of biological evolution as well as to cancer biology where evolutionary dynamics with trade-offs is one of key factors. In order to productively tackle these challenging problems, we will bring together leading evolutionary biologists, experts in statistical physics of complex systems, and cancer researchers.
