press release #19
Radiomeasurements to start at Aragats
CRD continues to add new measurement techniques to
the Aragats Space Environmental Center (ASEC) facilities. Among
important heliospace and geospace parameters are solar flare correlated
radiobursts. Along with monitoring of secondary cosmic ray fluxes and
geomagnetic field disturbances, the radio patterns of the coronal mass
ejections, travelling in Solar Corona, will highly improve the
reliability of the forewarning and alerting service on most violent
Space Storms. Professor Gemmeke from Research Center Karlsruhe
introduced this new technique to CRD electronics group. This year CRD
radio engineers assembled 3 antenas' preamplifiers and filters for
network aiming to monitor Sun “radio-broadcasting”. On August 22-23,
2009 the measurements at Nor Amberd and Aragats proved that radio-noise
level can allow these precise measurements. Monitoring of the Sun in
metric waves at Aragats will start this Autumn. 3 antennas, send from
Karlsruhe with corresponding data asquisition electronics will be
installed at Aragats, later, if necessary the same type of antennas
will be fabricated in the YerPhI workshops.
The network of antenas will be very useful also for the another
important physical problem ASEC is occupied with now. The thunderstorm
and lightning phenomena turns to be very tightly connected with
changing particle fluxes measured on the Earth surface. CRD scientists
measure fluxes of electrons, photons and neutrons correlated with
strong lightning usual at Aragats in May, June and July.
Radiomeasurements will highly support this research. Patterns of
frequency histograms will help to locate the place of lightning stroke
and to estimate the intensity of huge electrical fields in the
thunderstorm clouds.
